The first two lines spoken, dry and cold, then sung — horsehair fiddle lead over a low steppe drone, frame-drum pulse building.
Before the boy became a khan, before the war I won to make him one — there was a house of ash where an empire stood, the blood of Genghis hunted to one thin thread, and a hundred years of brothers eating brothers.
Pre-Chorus
The pulse tightens, wooden flute climbs, war-drums enter.
Everyone had learned to live in the wreck. Everyone but me.
Chorus
Full band — distorted guitar under the pulse, horsehair fiddle over the top, mezzo forward.
They handed me a ruin and a name, a hundred years of ash where the world had been. I will not live in the wreck of the great — I will not keep it, I will build it back. The blood is not done. Not while I hold it.
Verse 2
Driving — her position, the widow measured as a prize.
I married into the falling house, a queen of a throne already cracking under me. When my khan died they measured me for a bride-price, a widow to be won, a crown to be split — they did not know what I was counting.
Pre-Chorus
Mutated.
Everyone had a claim on the wreck. Everyone but me had given it up.
Chorus
Bigger, a low steppe drone behind; the last line mutates.
They handed me a ruin and a name, a hundred years of ash where the world had been. I will not live in the wreck of the great — I will not keep it, I will build it back. The blood is not done. I am what holds it.
Bridge
Half-time drop to horsehair fiddle and a lone drone — the vow — then a soprano lift building back.
Let the strong men carve the corpse of the khans. I know where the last of the blood is hidden. I will raise it, I will armour it, I will set it back on the throne — and I will ride for it myself.
Final Chorus
Biggest — a single soprano lift, war-horns.
They handed me a ruin and a name, a hundred years of ash where the world had been. I did not come to mourn the great — I came to raise it, I came to ride. The blood is not done. It rides with me.
Outro
Sudden drop to a single horsehair fiddle, dry. Hard cut.
They will call it the work of a khan. It started with a woman in the ash.
The history
The Mongolian steppe, c. 1479 — a century after the fall of the Yuan, the Borjigin line hunted almost to extinction
Source: Mongolian chronicles (*Altan Tobchi*; Sagang Sechen, *Erdeniin Tobchi*, 1662); the documented shape of the post-Yuan civil war
Named figures
MandukhaiThe widowed queen of the Northern Yuan, measured as a prize by the men who want her legitimacy — the song is her refusal, narrated from the inside, to let the house of Genghis stay fallen
Manduul KhanHer first husband, whose death around 1479 leaves the throne empty and Mandukhai exposed — withheld here as the vacancy the track opens on
The Borjigin lineThe dynasty of Genghis Khan, hunted through a century of civil war down to a few hidden heirs — the ‘blood’ the title refuses to give up on
What this song renders
By the 1470s the Mongol world had spent a hundred years tearing itself apart. The empire of Genghis and Kublai was long gone; what remained on the steppe was the Northern Yuan, fractured into feuding tribes and dominated in the west by the Oirats, with the Borjigin (Genghisid) line hunted nearly to extinction. When Manduul Khan died around 1479 the throne stood empty and his young widow, Mandukhai, was left as a prize the surviving strongmen meant to win — marry her, and inherit the legitimacy of the house.
The track renders that moment and nothing after it: the ash of empire and a widow who refuses to accept it’s finished. It seeds everything the album will pay off — the hidden heir, the refusal of the strongman, the ride to war — but stages none of it yet. This is resolve standing in the wreckage.
The outro plants the album’s thesis in the future tense: the reunification she is about to engineer will be remembered as the khan’s, not hers. It is the grievance the closing track, You Will Remember the Khan, returns to and names.
Verdict
Documented in outline, dramatised in voice. The century of Mongol civil war, the near-extinction of the Borjigin line, and Mandukhai’s widowhood around 1479 are on the historical record. The track invents no events — it renders the ruin and the resolve. Its single licence is to put a documented situation into her own first-person voice, which the chronicles never preserved.
